Work Experience:


1971-1978 General clinical work in mission hospitals in Nepal, Bihar, Maharastra, and Andhra Pradesh. The responsibilities included care of patients in the areas of paediatrics, surgery, obstetrics, and community health.

1978-1984 Chief Medical Officer, RUHSA Programme, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore. The responsibilities of this post were planning and implementing Primary and Secondary Health Care for a population of about 100,000 people in K V Kuppam block of Vellore District, Tamilnadu. An infrastructure for control of communicable diseases, safe motherhood, and reducing malnutrition was established during this period.

1984-- Head of RUHSA Department, Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore. The responsibilities during the initial phase were on integrating the autonomous RUHSA Programme as a full-fledged department of the institution. Subsequently the responsibilities were in consolidating the work and introducing procedures in maintaining the activities. The significant successes witnessed during this period are indicated.

1. Elimination of poliomyelitis, whooping cough, measles, and neonatal tetanus from KV Kuppam block.
2. Improvements in Crude Birth Rate, Infant Mortality Rate, and Perinatal Mortality Rate.
3. Reduction in stunting, under weight, wasting among under five year old children and reduction in low birth weight among newborns.
4. Established a community based comprehensive HIV/AIDS programme.
5. Initiated a programme for adolescent girls.
6. Managed sustainable programmes of development in the areas of milk production and select areas of agriculture development with focus on poorest of the poor.
7. Organised over 5,000 women in 280 Self Help Groups with over Rs. 500,000. in savings and over Rs.1,500,000 in credit.
8. Developed programmes in training, evaluation, and consultation with focus on health management training.
9. Promoted collaborative research work leading to PhD level fieldwork, backed by retrievable computerized information on population of entire KV Kuppam block with over 80 scientific publications.
10. Maintained linkages with international organizations and institutions of learning.
